Records of the human body

Even if scientists know it better and better, the functioning of the human body often seems mysterious to us. Here are some numbers to understand its complexity.

150 milliseconds

This is the duration of a blink of an eye which is fast enough not to hinder the view. If the adults blink an average of 15 times per minute, the babies perform only 2 blinks per minute, hence the impression of stare that is sometimes attributed to them.

1200 liters

is in the context of normal breathing, the amount of air inhaled each day by our lungs, an average of 300 million liters in the course of life. The respiratory rate changes with age: the newborn breathes about 40 times a minute, the 15 to 20 year old breathes 20 times a minute and the adult over 20 years breathes an average of 10 times a minute.

38,000 billion

is the number of bacteria that contains the average human body, more than the number of its cells! most of these bacteria elect home in the mouth and digestive system.

100 billion

is the approximate number of neurons present in the brain. This figure varies very little in the course of life. The elderly person possesses almost as many gray cells as the young.

1.5 liters

This is the amount of saliva that we produce on average every day, about 40,000 liters in the course of life. What to fill a big tanker truck, and even more if you're used to chewing chewing gum, which stimulates the salivary glands!

65%

is the average amount of water present in the human body, about 45 liters for a person of 70 kilos. This water is not distributed evenly: if the teeth contain only 1%, the organs richest in water are the kidneys (81%) the heart (79%) and the brain (75%).

180 liters

is the amount of blood the kidneys filter each day to purify the blood plasma. This results in a urine output of 1.5 liters on average.

30000 billion

This is the number of cells in a person's body of 70 kilos measuring 1.70 meters. There are about 300 different kinds of cells in the body

10000

This is the number of heartbeats of an adult individual each day, under normal conditions at 1.16 beats per second. That's about 36.8 milliseconds in a year.

79

This is the amount of saliva that we produce on average every day, about 40,000 liters in the course of life. What to fill a big tanker truck, and even more if you're used to chewing chewing gum, which stimulates the salivary glands!is the number of organs - a set of tissues fulfilling a certain physiological function - contained in the human body. In March 2018, American researchers proposed that interstitium, a set of tissues located between organs, be considered as an 80th organ. The proposal must be debated by the scientific community before being validated.
